Pre arrivals tasks
Kyle Smith
As the title suggest my name is Kyle Smith. And I'm hoping to make a comic Artist/Writer. And For our first prearrival task I did:
Tokyo Ghoul's Art style
This piece of media is what set my life on the path it is today. Inspiring my masked passion for art and writing stories. The author and piece of media I am talking about is Sui Ishida and his most famous work on Tokyo Ghoul. Sui Ishida's work on Tokyo Ghoul did not just reach and inspired me as Tokyo Ghoul has reached 47 million global sales, so something must have been worth reading to reach a number that high? And one of the main factors of this success is his art style.
Through reading multitude of Manga's, I find one of my favourite aspects of its art style is the evolution of it. As an audience seeing an artist's art become redefined and improve slowly through its run, it feels personal like not just seeing the story being played out but the more personal story of the artist adapting to fit their work like schedule. Sui Ishida produced a chapter of Tokyo Ghoul each week, which most of the time is the standard for manga. Which heavily influences the art style. Seeing a manga artist’s art style evolve over time which can be due to getting more experience with writing and drawing weekly is like I previously said personal and something I love withing manga. Because I can see this personal art development through reading, I find myself hopeful and inspired knowing that I too can Improve my art even when an artist like Sui Ishida at the start was a good artist and then became one of the most talked about artists within manga with how far he has become and for an audience member like me, It helps me feels hopeful. This hopefulness could be doubled knowing that when I want to publish art that my art can still change and will never improve.
Sui Ishida’s art style is beautiful throughout Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul: Re. Even though I have explained how his art style has evolved, his work still stands up and something i still adore 10 years later. Tokyo Ghoul was published within Shueisha Inc and first appeared in Weekly Young Jump, which includes a seinen manga like Tokyo Ghoul. Seinen is a mature manga and Tokyo Ghouls art style comes across as more mature. An Example of a panel that art style in lines with its genre/themes happens in volume 7 of Tokyo Ghoul. The main character finds the fight within himself to overcome the current position he is in. As he finds the fight within himself the panel presents him gouging out his eye and tearing his face. I feel this panel caters towards a mature audience like seinen is for.
In conclusion, Sui Ishida is the artist that inspires me and my art. His art has come so far and his mature audience that has come along through the publishing of Tokyo Ghoul. All I can really say is that his art is stunning.
Rough Sketches:
![]() |
For my first sketch, I wanted to do a really rough sketch of my first thoughts. And for my first thoughts I wanted to use my little mascot as inspiration for my superhero. Sometimes in popular manga, some authors have little characters to talk to the reader and my little character is something I want to present who I am. A lot of my drawing though is rough within this sketch.
For my next Sketch, I wanted to translate my character into digital format, This sketch is still really rough but I wanted to show experimentation. I really like the scarf, it feels so cool. I love the inverted of my original design, but it feels like it could be a alternate costume in the game.
Next my actual character design: the character pose feels really stiff but I wanted to show it's actual costume design off. I do like like it and It feels like an actual hero costume.
i Obviously need to show different experimentation, I wanted to show alternate colours and will the scarf I do like. I wanted to produce some different ideas and and I like a lot of them. When showing someone my work they said "It likes Batman, Wolverine, Spiderman and Deadpool rolled into one." Luckily for me those are my inspirations and character I absolutely love so that's why I made a yellow and red versions of my character to reference the character. The purple is purple because the superheroes are supposed to represent us and purple is my favourite colour.
Putting the logo on the chest was important as it's got to show who we are in a small logo and I'm a spiritual person. Not the type telling you that you will die tomorrow but believes in balance ect and ect. On the first logo sketch I was suggested to use the theatre masks as inspiration, I like the duality with little bows on it.
Love the work pookie, keep it up <3
ReplyDeleteI really like all of the symbology, and all of the different variants you did
ReplyDeleteGreat start, Kyle. You've put a lot of care and attention into this, which I hope you'll keep up. I'd like to help you build some confidence in your line work, as well as the expression of form. Your design skills, methodology and analytical skills are already developing very well. Welcome to the course!
