Glass Artist and entrepreneur.
Dale Chihuly had a subtle interests in the themes of immortality and mortality. With a piece of art called Neon and Ice. However, I would argue that the idea of immortality can closely link to his other artworks like the ones I picked out in my mood board. How? Dale Chihuly uses a lot of glass art to depict ocean life. Using glass to make tentacle like shapes to make coral. What's that got to do with anything immortality. Well, iconic ocean animal a jellyfish are immortal. The specific jellyfish called Turritopsis dohrnii are immortal. Jellyfish are iconic for their tentacles as well, This is probably a coincidence but I think this heavy links to the theme of immortality. I would also argue that it being a man made structure could link the idea of both mortality and immortality and to make something out of nothing, could make a story of a man trying to mimic and obtain immortality through abstract ways. When we think of immortality, we think of higher beings like gods or aliens maybe? But, his glass art feel really unearthly and have that heavenly theme of the art making no sense and one of the pieces of art looking like an accurate representation of an angle through tentacles.
Believe it or not but he uses glass as a glass artist. Would you believe me if he uses more than that though? He uses acrylic paints, ink, charcoal, graphite, pencils and watercolours to support him in his work as well. One main tool a glass artist uses is a glassblower. Glassblowers are so cool, you get molten glass and inflate it into a bubble which is caried out with a blowpipe. However there are scientific glassblower which are made to specifically to blow glass. Scientific glassblowers originate in the UK and now I can be slightly proud of my country. This would be one of the main tools Dale Chihuly uses.
