Building A Gameworld -Research and Development-

 Research And Development.

Development sketches and Research is one in the same for me. As they constantly bounce off each other and work hand in hand. So, grouping this section into the same blog makes sense for me.

Where do I start? Starting an assignment is always hardest for me so, let ask the 5 Ws.

Who?

What?

When?

Where?

Why?

This will keep my ideas grounded and let me think with prompts in my head. Also, What helps are mood board. I love using mood boards as visual development.

So, Who?

I have Dale Chihuly and he is a glass artist. So, let look at his art and how I can implement his work into a building.

Dale Chihuly is going to make it hard for me. 3D modelling Ideas like these are going to be difficult. 3D software love 4 sided shapes but going into a more triangle is going to upset it. But what building can I make?

What?

I started thinking about doing a museum but that's quite a boring idea. So, I tried looking else where. And then I had a thought. What if I made a generic building and give it excitement. Dale Chihuly tried to display immortality and mortality in his art and history is immortal and made by mortals. So!! I want to do a news station, but how will that work with Dale Chihuly's art?

When?

When is my building taken place? My first thought was cyberpunk. I felt like Dale Chihuly has an explosive art style which links with cyberpunks flashy and vibrant city like his art style. I tried looking at things like Cyberpunk: 2077, Si Fi Rush, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and Spiderman 2099 in Edge of Time. And then I tried looking at Cyberpunk anime and ghost in the shell. This also answers the next question is:

Where?

A cyberpunk town. I have to do a building a in Malice town.

throughout doing initial sketches my thoughts were cyberpunk? The idea of using cyberpunk will make the wakey images fit in more with the world. But I wanted to get the idea down first. I wanted to make a cyberpunk, shipwrecked news building. The idea is a bit out there but I wanted to push myself to do it. I wanted to add Dale Chihuly's idea as decorations for my cyberpunk building.

Through out this I stared making more lighting choices. This is like a initial art progress. This is where I throw my ideas at a brick wall and see what works and what I like. And develop them. It's my preferred methods of exploring ideas. One of my first Ideas of adding more elements of Dale Chihuly's work is was the twisting antenna. Dale Chihulys loves the twisting of tentacles it appears within his glass art and further on I use that to refer to his collaboration on making a building. I wanted to try and draw an escalator and in the video I show, you can see my attempt on doing it but this was the roughest idea of drawing one. And with the image on top of this text, is me trying another hologram things they have in cyberpunk. I wasn't a big fan of it taking up everything but the idea was the hologram to circling the building, which when doing sketches of the back, I will try. But for now was unhappy with it.

Within this I tried to make satellite dishes. I started realizing that it's making it look almost alien. And personally I like that. The unintentional introduction to a more alien themed when dealing with Dale Chihulys art. Even though I haven't gone with his preferred more lighter colours, I took the idea of his use of the ocean tentacles he likes so much. Did you know that the idea of Octopuses are aliens and assumed to be alien life is highly specialised. Even though Octopuses have arms and not tentacles, they share the similar shape of tentacles you would find on squids. Octopuses are my second favourite animal because there unnatural place within our earth. I start leaning into more cyberpunk aliens theming.

Improved escalators. I can't lie they are really wonky, I believe the main problem was me not drawing up from each step. Within the third step of the escalator you can see it starting to get wonky. I believe the main problem was not drawing a line up from the corners of the end of the second step. Why didn't I fix it then? Because I didn't want take too long to develop my idea. Not in any rush but keeping my mistakes around let me learn and I took me awhile to see where I went wrong to be honest. My brain didn't process what happened but I'm happy to learn where my mistake and hopefully looking back at this assignment I will be able to laugh at my self for a silly mistake. So now, you see the weird disco light building. Sometimes within media you see the landscape almost blur with tinted primary colours and green. My first thought where you see this is a lot of romance anime in a scene where the city blurs behind the characters. SO ROMANTIC! Those colour I used for the disco building, is the general colours I see Dale Chihuly use. And I just wanted to see what it would look like.

What is this I have done? To be frank, they are supposed to replace relay towers for hot air balloons. They will be called Relay Balloons. Creative name right? Well, The Idea is that they actively move through the city having a large spread high and low. Which increase the signals in low and smaller areas. I wanted to mix Dale Chihulys uses of tentacles and some of his other works like Putti and Ikebana If I had to explain what Dale Chihulys work is like it's very alien and what I would call an aliens attempt at art. Which I find so silly and fun. My idea for these Relay Balloons are from Chinas lantern festival. Even though what you see is almost other worldly, I feel the idea of these alien tech lighting up the sky almost petrifying.

Here's all I done within these Idea developments. I'm mixed on the tentacles as the lamp posts. And this whole Idea feels bizarre to be honest. I'm still needing to make the final design sheet but I feel that I could pull all this together in a weird way. I don't hate it but I feel like I just need to let these ideas cook a little longer.

Here's a video of my progress drawing this.

I got some feedback telling me to redesign as it has a lot going on and to drop the Anime stylisation. And To be honest I felt a bit frustrated but I took some time to think about what I'm wanting to actually do. And I'm not to sure. I think I went a bit too weird and out there. Thinking back on it, I was overcomplicating Dale Chichulys work and thought to go more simpler and Not to stress it out too much and so I went for these instead:

(Rough Sketches)

(First Floor Draft.)

(Second Floor Draft)

(Third Floor Draft)
(Rough Draft The Three Floor all Together.)

I would like to point out that the two rough sketches and I chose the first one and slowly It transitioned into the right one.

I took inspiration from the Superman Daily Planet for this art. I was thinking of ideas in my brain constantly and just nothing felt right and then December 19th 2024, The Superman trailer came out and I had an epiphany. Maybe I can make some type of statue or something type of object on the building that screams Dale Chihuly and so, That's when I started drawing it.  I'm really happy with how it came out but at the same time, I'm not too sure. I'm not too confidant designing buildings and I do think it came be done with more colour.
