Who are Production Artists?

Production artists appear at the end of the project to tweak and prepare the work of the graphic designers so the job is ready to be released to the public. I have been looking for production artists to write about, and I found it difficult to look for one. This is due to production artists working between the production designer and the art director. They are usually close to both the designer and director, being able to translate what art directors desire while they are unavailable. Who is Scott P. Murphy?

Scott P. Murphy is a production designer and Art director who has worked on projects like Daredevil Netflix show, The Punisher, and The first 2 movies of Spiderman. I adore these pieces of media and researching someone who helped produce media which has inspired me as well. Scott P. Murphy has 33 years of experience as shown on his LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-p-murphy-6aaaa39/. With 33 years of experience the earliest work I could find on IMDb within: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0614695/?ref_=nmbio_ov. He worked on Santa Barbara from 1991-1992 and has been doing work ever since like his work on Die Hard: With a Vengeance 1995, Men In Black 1997, and his latest work with Mayor of Kingstown 2024. He still working on two projects still yet to be released called Duster and The Spook who sat by the door. He has been credited 33 for different movies/TV shows. I'm using IMDb because he has put a link to his IMDb page on his website meaning he's directing people to that page which gives the page credibility. I wanted to clarify this as IMDb is usually an anyone can edit it like the Wiki but if he approves of the page means it's credible and usable.

The Work of Scott P Murphy

I have previously mentioned that he has worked on Daredevil and above this text is one of his designs. I looked at how people designed sets and I found a place called setcrafters here: https://www.setcrafters.com/ultimate-set-design-software-guide and they showed us that they use both 3D and 2D art. Things I have noticed about this set is how it's framed with the rule of thirds which helps you set out your scenes with photography but It can be used in Art like comic books this helps highlight important details on a grid and the grid highlights the middle wall between the bookshelves. Which was revealed to be a secret door on Daredevil S2 Episode 6. Meaning the framing tells us that something important is at the door. Something else I find interesting is that the golden ration can also be applied here. The golden ratio is pretty much a mathematical equation that makes a spiral but it's used in Art and Photography to direct the audience's eyes through the spiral and in this case, we start at the left chair and follow up to the top of the bookcase and then down to the right bottom bookcase to the office chair and finishing in the middle of the secret door. This is the technique he most likely uses to set out and present his work. Something else I would like to highlight is the shapes he used within his work and his using squares as his main primitive shape. Within this scene, they are sneaking around a rich person's office, trying to find something and the squares present the idea of this man being powerful and sturdy with squares being used as their light, paintings, and chairs having a more curvy square than a sphere/circles. Along with this colours like brown and white show a modern and rich style. Because they are using a faded brown it shows richer and less filthy. The Peers of Scott P. Murphy

The Peer I'm going to talk about is called Neil Spisak and He worked on Spider-man with Scott P. Murphy, The Scene to the right is what Neil Spisak made which I got the information here: https://theasc.com/articles/spiders-stratagem-spider-man#:~:text=Production%20designer%20Neil%20Spisak%20recreated,not%20larger%2C”%20Burgess%20explains. And he made the rubble and In quote "Neil was essentially bringing the scale of the city onto

The stage by taking a small element of the structure and making it appear as large as the real thing, if not larger," Says Don Burgess. I'd assume that by that quote Neil Spisak made that balcony itself and brought it onto set making it feel more immersive. Within Scott P. Murphy's page, he worked as a designer in New York City but compared to Neil Spisak's more physical work, Scott P. Murphy probably specialized in his digital work as seen in Daredevil. Neither is better than the other and the time in which these movies were made differs with technology. But it's incredible how Neil Spisak made that balcony that actual size. Unlike Scoot P Murphy, A little more of Neil Spisak is that he was born in 1956 making him older than Scott P. Murphy and he has worked on fewer projects than Scott P. Murphy has. Even though we don't know how old Scott P. Murphy is we know that Neil at least looks older due to the white hair and more wrinkled skin. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0819105/.

Conclusion

Through out my essay, I wanted to inform you about Scott P. Murphy and his work within media and inform myself of the production of movie which has impacted me as a person, my love for Spider-man and seeing the people behind it, is something not just me but more people need to know. Writing this has opened my eye to understand and start thinking how I want my journey with art to be, Scoot P, Murphy's catalogue of movies he's worked on, makes me wonder about my journey with the industry and I am ever so excited.
